Frontotemporal Dementia: the tragic consequence of a risky evolutionary strategy?
Amber Biology partner Gordon Webster recently had the great, good fortune to attend and present at a conference on Frontotemporal Dementia - specifically the application of computational biology methods to the challenge of understanding and curing this terrible disease. The talks were inspiring, as were the many wonderful conversations he had with the other scientists and clinicians in attendance. This article was inspired by those conversations, and in it he speculates on the role of evolution in the origins of Frontotemporal Dementia. The conversations that inspired this piece emerged from a shared desire to understand the functioning of the healthy phenotype, and the recognition of this as a key step to understanding this complex disease.
